Theatre in the Park Internship 2025
Come be a part of the Tech Crew at Theatre in the Park - one of the country's largest outdoor Community Theatres, located in Johnson County, Kansas - 20 minutes from downtown Kansas City! 12 and a half weeks of hang, focus, tech/dress, and performances. The season runs from mid-May to mid-August.
The 5 shows at Shawnee Mission Theatre in the Park for this year: James and the Giant Peach, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, My Fair Lady, Catch Me If You Can, and a Disney Double Feature of The Aristocats Kids, and My Son Pinocchio JR.
This summer take advantage of a unique opportunity in the growing field of Theater Arts with a paid internship. Interns will get hands on experience with industry top sound systems and lighting rigs. No experience necessary - if you have the passion for theater tech and like working in a creative, challenging and a rotating work environment, we want to meet you!
If you are considering one of these positions and you do not have a place to stay in Kansas City, adjusted pay with a housing stipend is available for those who need it!
Internship Positions are as Follows:
1 Master Electrician - $5000 Total Stipend, paid out bimonthly
Work hand in hand with the Lighting Designer and supervising the season lighting Interns/Electricians and projects associated with the electrical department for the season. The ME is responsible for executing the prep-work for the season hang of the lighting plot as designed by the lighting designer to include regular equipment prep, auxiliary prep: assembling cabling runs, assembling needed data cables, general lighting accessories such as gobos, gel, etc.
During the season, the ME is responsible for scheduling the lighting team and assigning tasks for maintenance and upkeep of the equipment and plot for the shows. The ME oversees schedules, call times and delineation of duties based on the needs of the show. The ME also plots and preps any changes needed for show changeover work from the closing show to the next show and beginning tech week.
The ME also maintains the lighting paperwork throughout the entire season to document the process and advises the Season Lighting Designer of potential problems while working to troubleshoot and resolve issues as needed.
The ME will also work with the Season Lighting Designer in prep of specialty show-specific lighting needs and requirements to include practical lighting, wireless DMX lighted props &/or battery operated scenic units with installed lighting needs.
General experience with ETC IonXE Control Console, Automated lighting fixtures, LED Fixtures, SOCA Multi-Cable power distribution, basic electrical knowledge (110v & 208v Electrical Distribution) and conventional theatrical fixtures required. Additional experience with VectorWorks, Lightwright Lighting Paperwork, General Lighting Network & sACN protocol, LED Pixels and wireless DMX preferred.
3 Lighting Technicians - $4500 Total Stipend, paid out bimonthly
Work with lighting gear from Ayrton, ETC, and Chauvet. Gain experience hanging and focusing plots with over 200 lights including IP65 rated moving lights and leds, work through daily focus notes, learn to program the light board, and helping with audio when needed.
2 Audio Technicians - $4500 Total Stipend, paid out bimonthly
Work with d&b audiotechnik, Yamaha and Shure. Learn and employ daily wireless coordination, cast member and band micing, troubleshooting, and console operation. Help the lighting team when needed.
